Recently I’ve been asking my Mum friends about what they do for date nights, and how they go about fitting it into their schedules. The response I keep getting over and over is “yea, we keep saying we need to do that [incorporate a regular date night into their schedules]”.
One difficulty, of course, is arranging babysitters. I have some awesome friends who live close and have offered to take care of bubs. But, my problem is being proactive and organised about it and arranging it ahead of time (I’m used to being a “hey, let’s go out tonight”) kind of person.
So, I was excited to read about All Day Home which is one of Tokyo’s many oyako (parent-child) cafes, but with a difference. They have trained staff who will keep an eye on your kids in their lovely play area while you eat! While it’s obviously not quite the same as leaving bubs with a babysitter and heading out for the evening, it’s a nice way to get a bit of space to catch up and enjoy a meal with your beau or friends without having to stop every few minutes to tend to bubs.
The menu is basic but everything we ordered was pretty good. Plus they of course provide bouncers and baby chairs if you want to feed your kids/keep them close. The play area boasts a slide, ball pit, play-house and lots of cool toys, and the atmosphere is relaxed and the decor modern. We visited on a weekday at lunchtime, and it was very quiet, but I imagine it would get busier on the weekend. Note that they do ask you to keep your eye on your kids also (possible from anywhere in the restaurant), as the staff go in and out of the play area. When we visited the staff kept bubs entertained and safe for the duration of our lunch, so it worked fine for us.
There are several All Day Home cafes in Tokyo/Kanagawa, but we visited the one in Musashi-Koyama which is very close to Rinshi no Mori Park which makes for a lovely walk in the shade of the trees and also has a wading creek for a bit of a splash around in the summer. Note that some branches do not have staff available for childcare, so please consult their website or call ahead to check.
